Service:
Feasibility Study
Project:
Eco School
General Information:
The most urgent mater to consider in environmental design is energy consumption in use. The design considers both heat loss and thermal response of the building. It manages glazing to make most use of natural light while avoiding undue heat loss in winter or heat gain in summer. Ventilation is primarily natural, with some mechanical heat-recovery-ventilation.
Other matters considered include making the most of recycled materials, and making the new building as recyclable as practicable in its turn.

Clients Needs:
The existing school building is long overdue for replacement. The staff and governors are very keen to have a replacement which is a model of environmental, as well as educational, good-practice. They consider that moving to a new site would be detrimental, so the new building will have to be constructed on the existing site while the school remains in use.

Funding:
The study has been funded by the Education & Lifelong Learning Service of Liverpool City Council.
Completion:
The study was completed in Autumn 2001.
