Projects: 2004-2005

Rotunda Community College

109-113 Great Mersey Street, Liverpool, L5 2PL

Service:
Full Technical - Building

Project:
Handrail to improve accessibility of external stairs.

General Information:
The main entrance floor is the Upper Ground Floor. When the lift is installed, you will be able to enter from street level. Meantime you must use the grand outdoor steps. Some of the balustrades are on poor condition, but, even where they are complete, they do not provide much help on climbing the steps.
The college had already done several things to help such as painting the architraves around doors a different colour to provide contrast between the frame and both the door and the wall. This makes it mush easier for partially sighted people to negotiate the building. Similar treatment for similar considerations for the handrails of stairs.

Clients Needs:
Unless and until funding can be obtained to carry out the major works needed to make the college fully accessible, the premises will be difficult to get around for people of limited mobility.
In the meantime some relatively small bits of work can be done to improve matters.

Funding:
This sort of treatment often costs very little, especially if it can be incorporated into ongoing maintenance. These have been paid for out of the college's normal running costs.
