Alterations to the Reception layout and arrangements

General Information:
Because the building has a single staircase to the upper floor, regulations require fireproof barriers between rooms and escape routes. The main entrance opens on to the bottom of these stairs, the Admin Office had to be separated from the Entrance area (at the bottom of the stairs) by a glazed screen. The separation limited the visibility of the clients, who could be troublesome at times.
The solution, a reception desk opening on to the Entrance Lobby, but fitted with fireproof drop-curtains and separated from the office by a a fireproof partition. Other alterations were proposed to improve the supervision of the clients Waiting area.

Clients Needs:

The Lighthouse Project provides services in connection with drug abuse across Merseyside. They purchased their building on Oriel Road at the end of 2005 and moved in in March 2006 after some alterations. It soon became apparent that the Reception layout was not ideal. There was no opportunity for direct face-to-face contact with clients as they entered.

Funding:
The cost of the alterations (around £30,000) came from the organisation's own premises management funds.

Completion:
A change in their priorities led to a suspension of the project in March 2007. There are renewed hopes that it will be resumed in Autumn 2007.
